Here come the excuses
We were the better team; Ronaldo got Rooney sent off; we should have had a penalty in open play; carragher should not have had his penalty disallowed.
Is it just England that come up with some crappy excuses? England were probably the better team on the day but if you can't take penalties seeing as though the shootout has been going on for years, you deserve to lose.
Villain: Frank Lampard- how many times does he want to have a clear shot at goal and miss?
Hero: Portugal Goalie - saved what were pretty poor penalties
Honourary Beckham award for stupidity: Rooney.

It is extraordinary i agree. Rooney treads on an opponents nuts, and suddenly its Ronaldos fault. What card was the referee going to produce oherwise, off white ? mauve?
Ronaldo is a confident and cocky young lad no doubt, and did wade in, much as many many players do, but didnt brandish an imaginary card towards the ref, as often happens, so people should chill.
Actually his confidence in taking the final penalty is something the english players could have done with....they all looked pained prior to taking their kicks....
The Ft wrote an hilarious article a few weeks back on the 8 satges of every england world cup campaign....its starts with people convincing themselves that we will win the world cup, struggling through the group stages, meeting an old wartime adversary along the way, losing to the first decent team we come up against, then railing against some perceived injustice, then finding a scapegoat (or two), and finally by the time they get home, convince our selves that engalnd have got a very good chance of winning the next world cup....

I hatet he fact that most of the English people blame Rooney's departure on Ronaldo and not the fact that he tredged upon someone's balls!

I don't think there's much use of pin-pointing certain players and lamenting them as bad prospects for the game on the whole.
Since I have been watching footie for the past couple of years, I have seen enough players diving/cheating. Which I think is enough for me to suggest that people should stop branding top-class footballers for a case of their individual misdeed.
Footie is a creative sport, you have to think on ur toes; its too fast for you to make placid decisions. So I don't really see the point of blacklisting Ronaldo on his part today, though being a man, I can say, stepping on someone's balls is as big as an offence.
I am curious to find out from Man U fans, for whom Ronaldo plays...if he would have done the same for lets say Man U v/s some other team, how would they have reacted. So until unless people critisize cheating/diving as a whole, they should stop pin-pointing out players and blacklisting them.
Of course the one absent throughout the world cup and its long lead up, and undoubtedly in its aftermath is a questioning of how good the england players are.
There is some distnace in top level sport between having 3 top class operators and 5 or 6, in terms of being able to play in a consistenly imposing way. England have failed to do this under ericsson, save beating germany 5-1 in munich a long time ago.
The team is individually strong, but other countries can too boast a strong indvidual mix. Even lesser teams prosper more than england with repsct to their potential becasue a little savvy can go a lomg way in competitive situations.
What is frequently ignored in painting the current crop as the most talented since 1970 is that the euro 96 venables team contained gascoigne, sheringham, and anderton, players blessed with savvy, who seldom payed the ball long, whereas englands current engine room i staffed by physically dynamic players. Gerrard and Lampard certainly have some vision, bu tthey operate for their respective club teams surrounded by expensivly assmbled solid framworks, and the guile is provided by others. Faced with more responsibility for england they can only offer drive and persuasive ling range shooting, but not a comtemporeaneous reading of the patterns of play. As a result the ability to open up an opposing defence is virtually non-existent.
hence the reliance on rooney to provide a spark, which is an unrealistic burden however talented he is.
Very impressibe performnace from Andrew Murray, although beating roddick is no big thing these days, but i thought murray displayed that one thong missing from the football team, some street smarts. He has a good variety of shot, and his depth is generally very good. Still prone to the odd amateur moment, which may hold up his progress, but he has top 10 talent. thats probably not enough for him to break into the top 2 a few years out, but we shall see.
